After a long spell of missing these shows and being totally focused on Butter I am freshly revived by this New, New Monsoon. The "kids" bring a new energy to the band and Shawn is off the hook talented. Once Marshall and Shawn really start mastering the songs, their exploration as a band will grow and blossom as it has with every line-up change. It sounds as if this line-up is solid though and we're hoping for these two stick around for awhile.

great show! friday was fun too, but there was a great vibe in fairfax and they didn't have to share the stage, except with Jerry of course. it was fun to see him up there with phil and then dancing on the rail with fred. i used to love the talking heads. i missed the norcal picnic, but i think there were more that made both. jojo and josh maybe? it all goes by so fast, but we do get an East Bay Monsoon in just 2 weeks!!!!! yeah, we are very spoiled here :0) i can't wait! i'll post a setlist from friday here if i see one. my highlights were the song for marie opener, sweet brandy wine and the hey jude encore with the motherhips. good stuff!

Notes:
"-" means no stop, but not a segue
"!" note worthy

1) Lyrics from "16 Shells From a Thirty Ought Six" on purpose. Last
verse
from 2:19 not so much on purpose.
2) Jerry Harrison of Talking Heads on keys with Phil. Sang a little
during
the jams

It was a good solid show. The venue was full. The band seamed relaxed
and
happy. It was an enthusiastic crowd that danced and boogied hard.
There
was a wide range of people there. Older nicely dressed folks to young
hippies. I met a guy who was supporting Obama for president. He was
dancing huge right in front of the stage to my left. We had good
conversation at set break and after the show.

With two exceptions, myself and Simon, people that went to the
Unbirthday
did not make it and those that made the show did not attend the
unbirthday.

My nearly two hour drive (90+ miles) started around 2am. Thankfully it
was
uneventful. Redbull did the trick. A lot of deer on the road. Lucky
for me
they didn't do anything really stupid like jump from the bushes in
front of
my car! I arrived home and crawled into bead right at 3:50am, 12 hours

after I arrived at the unbirthday in Golden Gate park :-)
Hello Friends,

We've just uploaded 3 new songs to our MySpace page, please stop by and take a listen!

http://www.myspace.com/honkytonkhomeslice

These songs are from the December 15th concert we played at the Oriental Theater in Denver, Colorado and feature special guests Keith Moseley on electric bass & Christian Teele on drums. The show was professionally recorded on multi-tracking equipment, and we then chose these 3 songs to have professionally mixed so they sound their very best:

As always, we'd love to see a gaggle of out-of-towners. The reference list of intrepid travelers who have danced in the Cafe's sand & lived to tell about it includes: dr bob, Chip Reed, Jim Beam Anderson, Pissy Susan, Kiera, Greg Y, George H, S Katz, Lisa B, Deb Blackcat, all the band wives... and many more. Ask any of 'em if you have the least doubt about the wisdom of putting Houston on your tour itinerary.

having just spent this past weekend out in SF, complete with a trip to chinatown on their NYE and remembering our own theme for this NMYE - PROSPERITY....i thought i would share:

Promise Of Prosperity
Chinese Year Of The Rat
Chinese New Year this time around is the Year of the Rat, which brings with it the promise of prosperity. The Chinese admire the rat for its quick mind and ability to gather valuables and save them for the future. Since 2008 is the Year of the Rat, the year ahead should offer many opportunities to acquire wealth, as well as the ability to make choices that enable us to provide comfort for a long time to come.

Since the rat sign is the first in the Chinese zodiac calendar, we may feel the energy of a cycle beginning. We may also feel a pioneering spirit that helps us to forge ahead with a completely new endeavor. Looking beyond Western culture’s distaste for rats, we may be able to appreciate their ability to thrive in less than ideal conditions. This quality might offer us hope that whatever challenges we may face will only serve to make us stronger and more able. The rat’s ability to solve problems is well-known, so we can choose to enjoy any challenge that helps us keep our minds sharp while also making life more of a game. A competitive nature may develop within us, leading us to use the rat’s ability to focus on priorities. The rat can also remind us to be less worried about pleasing everyone we meet and more focused on our goals.

We should be aware of the rat’s habit for collecting and not allow ourselves to become so focused that we neglect those around us. Being constantly on the alert for opportunity can be stressful, so we can make the decision to balance our pursuit of prosperity with the enjoyment of good food and atmosphere and the people we trust to offer us both support and space. With the energy of challenge and possibility, the year is likely to be exciting without being explosive. The Year of the Rat is sure to offer the type of enjoyable challenges that will enable us to become all we can possibly be.

We are having a theme show for a little post Valentines Day treat~ The Love Ball! Feel free to dress in your reds, hearts, pinks! So what if you have been scrooged by lovers~ This is about YOUR heart and what you love....maybe that just means good friends and great music!

This will be the 3rd time NM has played the Foundry, and the 4th time NM has played this special area. NOTE: The FOundry has a new stage! It now resides in good feng shui towards the back of the venue to create a fabulous dance floor in a historical building. If you have never explored this town, maybe now is your chance. Were nestled about an hour north of Sacramento in the Sierra Foothills. About 3 hours from SF. Please feel free to contact me about the area, places to stay, general info. This town has a great vibe and is starting to catch on to the magic of NMonsoon, and its really cool to have those fun folks who might not be as in the know as us here on tribe and in the jam scene, be so receptable to New MOnsoon every time they have played in town.

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The boys kicked our asses last night. I think I danced harder last night than at any show in the last decade.
The first set was one great song after another, the band taking virtually no breaks between songs.
The first set was like a great set of waves, each song building in intensity, powerfully carrying my dancing soul
from one tune to the next.
There are not enough good things to say about Sean Hutchinson. I've now seen him twice and all I can say is this kid can
DRUM!!!!!! He is quickly becoming one of my favorite drummers.
While I had really gotten to love what Ron Johnson brought to the band, I have to say the bass player will be a great fit. He plays
great and has an incredibly beautiful (looking and sounding) six string bass. I have high hopes for what he will bring to the
band.
The highlight for this old deadhead was a great "Eyes Of The World", joyously played, it swept me away into a blissed out
daze.
There was also a very nice "Water Vein", and "Greenhouse" from the new album. During "Alaska" the band brought out a guest on
dobro. I don't think the sound was really set up well for him, from were I was you could barely hear his contributions. It was a
crowd pleaser though, to say the least.

The band played about as late as you can play at the Tractor, giving us multiple encores.

New Monsoon is the best touring act going at the moment. See as many of their shows as you possibly can.
Magic is a rare thing and should be appreciated when it shows itself.
New Monsoon can create musical MAGIC.
It was worth it, my daughter is awesome. But now she's old enough now, and it's her father's weekend, for me to be a true live music pilgrim again. Which brings me to the topic of my post, I need a floor (or couch, that would be sweet) to crash on after the show. I'm also hoping their are other Mammas and Mammasitas at this crash place (I'm looking for a family crowd, not a shwilly crowd, and not cause I don't like shwilly, just cause I can't shwill like I could ten years ago) I'm taking the train in from Davis right before the show. I hoping to find a place in the city or the east bay that includes a ride to it from the Fillmore because I make a silent statement about the war in Iraq by not owning a car. No, that's really not true, I crashed my car and I just don't want to buy another one because they're money pits, but the silent statement about the war thing sounds cooler. If you have such accomadations (ie: floor space, running water, and transport) and you can kick them down to me, I would bring the most delicious, wheat and gluten free, organic chocolate chip cookies for your enjoyment. Drop me a line :)

i thought i should post something about their latest jog through CO....

there were three shows of the last part of the run, the first starting in CO Springs, which unfortunately i didn't make, as i was exhausted from 2 1/2 days of painting and home preparation. freddie would be able to fill you in.....

the second was at the fox in boulder. expecting much more from a college town on a friday nite, i was a wee bit disappointed at the turn out but would say overall, it was a decent crowd. however, there were definitely people whom i counted on to show but were apparently at some "secret yonder show" elsewhere. argh. anyhoo - it was still a good time and i enjoyed seeing marshall play with the boys again. freddie was right, the shawn/marshall combo is not only biggie-sized but incredibly yummy! And since i don't get to see her too often, i really enjoyed dancing alongside miss mary mar : )
NM Tour Tip #7 **if you have "professional camera equipment", take this advice from jen - appeal to the staff worker's more logical side and say you're not a professional. if they need extra convincing, either tell them just to take a look at your blurry pics or that you do it for the band. it works : ) i can't wait to see her awesome shots! thanks jen, for being so camera “with-it”. i have been slacking!

afterwards, we hung out with a couple doc stars, a rock star and a bickle into the wee hours, complete with predawn sledding shenanigans. it was wonderful to have this time with my friends – my family – you guys should know those moments are truly the ones I consider most special…..

finally, the last show of their tour ended at the stagestop, a local wooden joint just down the road in rollinsville. it is like bizarro world jellyphish lounge - only bigger; it's what the JPL would be if it wanted to grow up. i love it there and the energy from this show was really intense. the venue was tight with people and the dance floor packed! as it was miss mara's birthday, there were many dressed pink plucked from the realms of my fun closet in her honor to celebrate her lovely mara'ness. (i didn't know i had so much pink in that closet!) the color somehow even infiltrated the band, as phil had on the good 'n plenty candy shirt from the LCC candemonium show and jeff was wearing my favorite hot pink missy boa.... (sorry, jeremy! there will definitely be a theme to rotate around blue fleece hoodies somehow! xo ~)

i’m not a set list geek, and i’m not going to try and reconstruct one for you since honestly, much like the dead, my memory gets an ‘overwrite’ as one song ends and the next begins. consider me hopeless when it comes to trying to keep one – that’s what Katz is there for! being up front, right next to the speaker and in combination with the rowdy crowd (crowdy?), it took me awhile to get into the groove. i sorta felt like as though i was encased in a pinball machine getting bounced between pegs and thrown around by the flapper thingies so instead of hanging out with the boys during set break, i went out to the car and laid down in complete –silence-. it was just what I needed to get myself grounded and centered and upon my return, i was ready to play. finding my way up front to ride the rail with lovely jen, i was so glad i didn’t let my tiredness get in the way because HOLY SHEET the second set was OFF THE HOOK! super intense! nershi, bonnie (on the washboard) and bridget (on the fiddle, both from elephant revival) sat in on a few songs and the dance floor was literally bouncing! OH! and let’s not forget the surprise “interpretive french horn solo” during “Eyes”……which ironically enough, I find very fitting because if ever there was a time we were all communicating telepathically and with our ‘eyes’, this was IT! : ) finally, the encore was ‘stagger lee’ with billy, bonnie and brigett all sitting in again was really beautiful. the harmonies were stellar……a perfect ending to a ridiculously wonderful time. So Thank You New Monsoon – I really love you guys….

the late nite silliness happened over at our new home…it was fun hosting everyone again. being up here on the mountain, i’ve really missed the social activity that once used to be such a huge part of my life. i made new friends, connected again with friends not seen in awhile and basically just enjoyed watching everyone have a good time. there were ideas of a snowman building contest which never manifested and another even more crazy idea to build an outside upper deck bed to watch the stars, but was immediately scratched due to the subtemp weather. (that one’s gonna have to wait until it warms up a scoche!) as the last of the revelers made their way into the morning light, i sat on my couch and soaked in the vibrations that lingered. my house was full of loving energy and i could still envision the smiles and hear the laughs…..

i am blessed. : ) see ya at the Fillmore…..

Ticket sales are happening fast and last time NM played the Fillmore it sold out. I know that the online fees are high but you can go to the box office and buy your tickets.
The box office is open Sundays 10-4 and 30 minutes before doors when there are shows until 10pm. There aren't that many shows before ours so I thought you may want a heads up! Not listed on this link is that there is a Phil and Friends show next Friday Jan. 25. (it's sold out)
